How to publish your first book on KDP: a practical checklist
A step-by-step KDP checklist from final manuscript and metadata through ebook, print, preview, disclosure, and publication.
To publish your first book on KDP, finish and check the book before you begin the listing. Prepare separate ebook and print files, consistent metadata, the correct covers, rights and disclosure answers, and a pricing plan. Then upload, use KDP's preview tools, correct every material issue, and review the live listing after publication.
1. Freeze the editorial master
Do not format a manuscript that is still changing structurally. Complete developmental editing first, then line or copy editing, and finally proofreading at the appropriate stages. The distinctions in editing vs proofreading vs formatting will help you decide what is unfinished.
Create a clean master file and verify:
- title, subtitle, and author name;
- chapter order and headings;
- front and back matter;
- image captions, tables, lists, notes, and links;
- permissions and source records for material you did not create;
- removal of comments, placeholders, and internal instructions.
Keep a separate backup. Use clear versions such as book-title_master_2026-10-01.docx rather than names like FINAL-final-3.
2. Decide which editions you are publishing
An ebook and a paperback are separate products with different reading behavior and file requirements.
| Edition | Typical interior | Cover | Key checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle ebook | Reflowable EPUB or KPF | Front cover | Navigation, text reflow, links, image legibility |
| Paperback | Print-ready PDF | Full front-spine-back wrap | Trim, margins, bleed, page breaks, spine, print proof |
| Hardback | Print-ready PDF | Format-specific full wrap | Case or cover specifications, page count, proof |
KDP's official help lists supported ebook manuscript formats. Its print preparation guidance covers trim, margins, bleed, and print files. Check those pages for current requirements rather than relying on an old checklist.
3. Format each interior for its medium
For a normal ebook, use semantic headings and a working navigation structure. Let readers change text size. Avoid using spaces, tabs, or repeated returns to force visual alignment.
For print, choose the trim size, paper and ink choices, and bleed requirements before final layout. Review widows and orphans, blank pages, running heads, page numbers, image resolution, and where chapters begin. A change to trim size or manuscript length can change the page count and therefore the cover dimensions.
You can format a straightforward book yourself or buy help. Breakthrough offers a separately ordered $59 standard formatting service for a print-ready PDF and reflowable EPUB. Its $450 custom formatting service is intended for layout-heavy books such as cookbooks, workbooks, devotionals, journals, activity books, and educational manuals. Prices exclude applicable tax.
4. Prepare the covers after specifications are stable
An ebook needs a front cover. A print edition needs a full wrap with the back, spine, and front fitted to the exact specifications. Finalize the print interior first because page count affects spine width.
Check the cover at full size and as a small thumbnail. Verify that the title, subtitle, and author name match the metadata exactly. Inspect images and fonts for appropriate rights. Do not assume an ebook cover can simply be stretched across a paperback template.
5. Write and verify the metadata
Prepare metadata in a plain document before entering the KDP form:
- Language.
- Title and subtitle exactly as shown on the cover.
- Series and edition details where applicable.
- Author and contributor names.
- A truthful book description.
- Publishing rights information.
- Up to seven relevant keyword fields.
- Relevant category choices.
- Reading age or other audience details where appropriate.
KDP's metadata guidelines explain consistency and restricted metadata. Its keyword guidance says keywords should be relevant and not misleading. Use the process in how to choose seven KDP keywords rather than repeating the title seven ways.
6. Answer rights and AI-content questions accurately
You are responsible for the content you upload. Confirm that you hold the necessary publishing rights and that the book does not violate content rules.
KDP's current content guidelines distinguish AI-generated content from AI-assisted work and require disclosure of AI-generated text, images, and translations. Editing generated material does not change its origin under that guidance. Read the live wording during upload and answer based on how each part of your book was created.
Disclosure is not a substitute for editorial review. Check facts, citations, permissions, reader safety, and consistency yourself. If your manuscript began as an automated draft, follow a full AI manuscript editing checklist before formatting.
7. Create the KDP book details and upload files
Sign in to your own KDP account and start the relevant edition. Work through the book-details fields carefully, pasting from your verified metadata document. Then upload the interior and matching cover.
Save your work at logical checkpoints. Keep a record of the exact files uploaded. If KDP reports an error, read the whole message before rebuilding anything; one issue can cause several downstream warnings.
8. Preview the ebook on different reading settings
Use KDP's preview tools and, where practical, check the book on more than one device or app. Test:
- the table of contents and navigation;
- chapter starts and scene breaks;
- large and small font settings;
- portrait and landscape orientations;
- images, tables, lists, and callout boxes;
- external links;
- the first and last pages.
Ebook quality is about adaptability. A page that looks perfect at one font size can fail when a reader enlarges the text.
9. Preview and proof the print edition
Inspect every page in the print previewer. Look at inner and outer margins, bleed, blank pages, page numbers, headers, image placement, and chapter openings. Inspect the cover boundaries and spine alignment.
Order a physical proof when available and appropriate. Read representative passages and inspect the object in ordinary light. Check whether small text, fine rules, and dark images reproduce acceptably. Mark changes on one controlled copy, update the source, export again, and repeat the digital checks.
10. Set territories, price, and publication choices
Choose territories based on your rights. Review KDP's current pricing and royalty information in the interface and official help because program terms can change. Think about how the ebook and print prices relate, but do not force a neat ratio if production costs and reader value differ.
Confirm whether you are ready to publish now or need a scheduled or preorder workflow where supported. Do not choose a date based on hope that review will finish at a precise hour; platform processing times can vary.
11. Perform one final cross-format audit
Before submitting, compare the editions side by side:
- Does the metadata match each cover?
- Are the title and author names identical where intended?
- Is the newest approved manuscript in every format?
- Does each edition have the right ISBN or identifier setup?
- Are disclosures and rights answers accurate?
- Have you removed test links and placeholder text?
- Have you saved the source and uploaded files?
Breakthrough Tools plans include Topic Research and, according to tier, tools for descriptions, metadata keywords, drafting, humanizing, translation, and A+ Content. They assist with pieces of this checklist; they do not publish the book automatically or replace the final audit.
12. Check the live listing and keep a publication record
After the book is live, inspect its retailer page in each marketplace you care about. Check the displayed title, description, formats, cover, author information, and sample where available. Correct genuine errors through the appropriate dashboard rather than creating duplicate book records.
Keep a publication sheet containing the live links, identifiers, upload dates, source-file versions, prices, and later corrections. Your first publication then becomes a repeatable process instead of a memory test. The objective is not merely to press Publish; it is to know exactly what you published and be able to maintain it.
Questions people ask
What do I need before uploading a book to KDP?
Prepare the final manuscript files, matching cover files, book metadata, rights information, keywords, categories, pricing decisions, and any required content disclosures.
Should I upload an EPUB or PDF for a Kindle ebook?
Use a supported reflowable ebook format such as EPUB or KPF for a typical Kindle book. PDF is generally used for print-ready interiors, not ordinary reflowable ebooks.
Do I need a separate file for paperback?
Yes. A paperback needs a print interior sized for its trim and a full cover wrap calculated from the final specifications and page count.
Should I order a proof before publishing a paperback?
A physical proof is a sensible quality-control step because it can reveal layout, color, margin, and cover issues that are easy to miss on screen.
Does KDP require disclosure of AI-generated content?
KDP's current guidelines require disclosure of AI-generated text, images, and translations. Check the official content guidelines when you publish.
